Starting prices. The final price depends on size and condition; we measure for free and quote in writing. We are not VAT registered, so no VAT is added to our labour; where a price says “+ VAT”, that is the VAT our supplier charges on the materials, passed on at cost.
Which carpet suits which room?
- Stairs and landings: these take the most wear, because every foot lands in the same place. A hard-wearing loop pile such as Lincoln, or a heavy domestic carpet, holds up best.
- Bedrooms: you can choose a softer pile here, because the carpet gets far less traffic. Sidmouth and Strada Supreme are popular choices.
- Living rooms and family homes: a stain-resistant fibre such as Newport makes spills easy to deal with. It can be cleaned with diluted bleach, which helps with children and pets.
- Rentals: landlords usually want a hard-wearing, neutral carpet at a sensible price. Lincoln and Newport both work well.
How much does a new carpet cost?
Add together the carpet, the underlay, the fitting and any removal of the old floor. Carpet is sold from the roll in 4m and 5m widths, so a room is measured to the roll and not only to its floor area. A 3.2m by 3.6m bedroom cut from a 4m roll uses 4m by 3.6m of carpet, which is 14.4m². This is why we measure first. Your written quote shows each part, so you can compare it properly with another shop's price.
Stair carpet fitting
Stairs take longer than rooms, because each tread and riser is fitted by hand. Straight flights are the quickest. Winders and half landings use more carpet and take more time. Underlay and grippers
Underlay changes how a carpet feels and how long it lasts. It takes the load from each footstep, so the pile wears more slowly. If your existing underlay is flat, crumbling or stained, replace it with the new carpet. Grippers hold the carpet tight at the edges, and worn or loose ones are replaced as part of the fitting. Fitting, underlay and grippers are quoted separately after the free measure.
What happens on fitting day
- We confirm the measurements and the carpet with you.
- We lift the old carpet and underlay, if this is part of your quote.
- We check the floor and fix or replace grippers.
- We lay the underlay, then stretch and fit the carpet tight to the edges.
- We add door bars at thresholds and trim doors if the new floor needs more clearance.
Looking after a new carpet
Vacuum regularly, because grit cuts the fibres. Blot spills straight away and work from the outside of the mark inwards. New carpets can shed loose fibres for the first few weeks, which is normal and clears with vacuuming. Move heavy furniture slightly from time to time so the pile does not stay crushed.
