Where laminate works best
- Hallways: a hard surface copes with shoes, bags and wet weather better than carpet.
- Living rooms and dining rooms: it gives a wood look at a lower price than solid wood, and it wipes clean.
- Bedrooms: it suits people who prefer a hard floor, often with a rug for warmth.
- Rentals: landlords choose it because it is easy to clean between tenants.
For bathrooms and other rooms that get properly wet, we usually recommend LVT instead, because it is fully waterproof.
How much does laminate flooring cost to fit?
The board costs £19.99 per m² + VAT. Supplied and fitted, laminate starts from £550 per room with labour and materials included. Allow extra flooring for cuts and waste, because boards are cut at each wall and doorway. Rooms with alcoves, bay windows or a chimney breast take longer and use more boards. We measure for free and give you a written quote.
Getting the subfloor right
Click-fit boards need a flat, dry base. Bumps and dips make the joints flex, which is when floors creak or open up. Older East London houses often have uneven floorboards, so we check the floor at the measure. Loose boards are fixed, and uneven floors can be levelled first. Concrete floors are checked for moisture, and new screeds must be fully dry before fitting.
How we fit laminate
- We leave the boards in the room for a day or two, if needed, so they adjust to the temperature.
- We lift the old floor if this is part of your quote.
- We lay underlay across the floor.
- We click the boards together and stagger the joints, leaving a small expansion gap around the edges.
- We finish the edges and doorways with trims and thresholds, and trim doors if they need more clearance.
Looking after laminate
Sweep or vacuum to remove grit, then wipe with a damp mop that has been wrung out well. Dry spills quickly, even on a water-resistant board. Put felt pads under chair and table legs to prevent scratches, and use a mat at the front door to catch grit.
